چکیده
Purpose:The present study examined the effects of Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) as a rate control intervention for dysarthric speakers with Parkinson's disease.Adverse reactions to relatively long delay intervals are often observed during clinical use of DAF, and may result from improper "matching" of the delayed signal. To facilitate optimal use of DAF, clinicians may need to provide instruction, modeling, and feedback. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of clinician instruction on the effectiveness of DAF in treating speech deficits.A related purpose was to compare the effects of different delay intervals on speech

Critical Review: Does Delayed Auditory Feedback Improve Speech Intelligibility in Parkinson’s Disease?
This critical review examines the effect of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) on speech intelligibility in Parkinson’s disease. Each of the eight articles included in this review examines speech rate and intelligibility with the use of DAF in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Three of the eight articles found positive effects on intelligibility with the use of DAF and five of the eight articles ...
متن کاملTreating Fluency and Speech Rate Disorders in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease: The Use of Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF)
The purpose of this paper is to present clinical applications of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) in treating speech rate and fluency disorders in speakers with Parkinson’s disease. When used effectively with appropriate patients, DAF provides easily adjustable and often dramatic reductions in speech rate, which often leads to increased fluency. For optimal results, however, clinicians should pr...
متن کاملThe effect of rate control on speech rate and intelligibility of dysarthric speech.
PURPOSE This study investigated the effect of rate control methods (RCMs) on speaking rate (SR), articulation rate (AR), and intelligibility in dysarthric speakers. METHOD Nineteen dysarthric patients (7 unilateral upper motor neuron dysarthria, 6 hypokinetic, 3 flaccid, 3 ataxic) participated. SR, AR and intelligibility ratings were determined on the basis of 1-min recorded reading passages....
متن کاملReduction in Stuttering by Delayed and Frequency Shifted Auditory Feedback: Effects of Adaptation and Sex Differences
Eleven women and eleven men who stutter had to read five text passages, each with non altered, delayed (53 msec) and frequency shifted (-1⁄2 octave) auditory feedback, provided by headphones. Stuttering was measured as Percentage of Discontinuous Speech Time, by which durations of all stuttering moments are determined and related to the entire duration of the speech sample. For both sexes stutt...
متن کاملParkinson’s Disease and LSVT: EFFECTS ON BRAIN FUNCTION, SWALLOWING AND ARTICULATION
Parkinson’s disease (PD), a degenerative disease of the central nervous system, is noted for voice and speech deficits, classified as hypokinetic dysarthria. Dysarthric speech is characterized by vowels that are centralized due, in part, to the limited range of movement of the speech articulators. PD results in disruption of internal cues or trigger of movement. 89% patients with Parkinson’s ha...
